I found her one snowy afternoon during our Christmas break painting with her new paints. I watched her there for a minute, it made me so happy to see her deep in an art project, before I let her know I was there. Upon approaching her I caught sight of what she was working on--words, a reminder, and this is what it said,

art is the perfect talent for me! (don't forget)
My eyes swelled with tears and I almost lost it then, when i read her words, wondering if she knew just how powerful those affirmative words are. Sometimes our hearts lead us in places we don't feel adequate. We fall in love with something we don't do well or if at all. Tess loves art, but has often said she "doesn't feel good at it". Sound familiar? It does to me. It's hard to want to try when things don't come easy. Failure is a hard pill to swallow, but like J.K. Rowling said,
"it is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all--in which case, you fail by default."
Our travels may come with failures and set backs, we may not be good at what we try first time, but at least that means we're living and inevitably those experiences will help us for the next time--for the next place our hearts lead us.
Tess not only are you an amazing artist, but you are insightful beyond your years. Thank you for reminding me that I am the only thing holding me back and how powerful my words can be at propelling me forward. Your truth is now my truth--art is the perfect talent for me! don't forget.
Have a great weekend.

This made me tear up. What a sweetheart. And yes, it IS a perfect talent for her.
Lucky girl to have a mama who gets her.
thank you for this. just thank you.
Crying. Huge drops. I'm going to blame the pregnancy.
Thank you!!!! I took one art class when I was in 8th grade. I am a perfectionist and I wasn't any good. No more art classes for me.
It wasn't until I was 28 years old, and a stay at home mom, that I realized that I was artistic and I had suppressed it for soooooooo long. It felt like a found the missing piece of my life.
Art is the perfect talent for me, the perfectionist. It forces me to let go and just accept things for what they are and live for what I can make my life to be.
Thanks for sharing this :D
take my breath away. sweet child, with her mother's heart. xoxo
I guess I wasn't the only one tearing up. That was so sweet and profound. I have similar insights about my one daughter. The most painful part about being a parent is that you can't teach perspective. They have to learn by experiencing. They will never see so many things we see due to hindsight. Thank you for sharing that.
what a beautiful post and I thank Tess for her wise words and you for sharing them!
