males vs. females

Last night I went to a parenting class that is being offered in my area. As I sat listening to the recap of the discussion from the previous week, teach what you want your children to do instead of what you don't want them to do, I was very disappointed I was unable to attend. Just from the little bit I gathered I knew it was exactly what I needed and I should have been there. I hate that feeling. Anyway, I am doing my best to get the information I missed and when I do I will share it with you, but for now I am just grateful I was there last night, again, a lot of good information was shared.

Instead of focusing solely on children, their behave, and how to change it, the instructor, Eric Bjorklund, discussed the differences between males and females. It was so fascinating and as I listening to the giggling in the crowd (all adults) throughout the meeting, I realized I was not the only one who thought, Yes, exactly. That is so true. Of course the information was not all new to me, and I'm sure it won't be to you, but it's always a good reminder that as men and women we are coming from two difference places and understanding that is the first step to closeness.

Below are some of my notes from the evening. Some of the information came from, The Female Brain and The Male Brain by Louann Brizendine if you are so inclined to read more about it.

**Also keep in mind the information below is a generalization and may not reflect the male or female you know.

Males
-A male brain is compartmentalized. They don't make connections between emotions or even circumstances.
-A male brain is designed to do what it takes to survive and provide for his family (hunter gatherers).
-Men have a very literal brain they do not read more into a situation.
-Men are designed to have empathy for 1 second before moving on to problem solving.
-Men are fine being alone (50% will have only their wives and their confidant).
-Men are naturally endowed to sexually want women.
-Men like to compete.
-Men they bond by doing.

Females
-A female brain is integrated and is controlled solely by emotions.
-Woman will reload the same emotions of previous experiences when going through a similar experience. This makes it harder for woman to forgive. For example, if they have been hurt by their spouse and he does something similar as before she will reload and remember all the other times it's happened. Conversely, when they hold a baby they're flooded with all the emotions of when they held their babies.
-Generally woman are more perspective -- they process double of what a man can.
-Woman are born with empathy -- they will naturally assume the same posture as the person they are speaking with or begin to talk the same (a form of showing empathy).
-Woman are much quicker to apply what they learn to themselves.
-Woman have a strong need to feel connected. Need woman friendships.
-Woman want to be understood.
-Woman are designed to be nurturers

His needs/Her needs
01. Sexual fulfillment = acceptance / 01. affection (usually not sexual)
02. recreational companionship / 02. conversation (listen and understanding)
03. attracted to partner / 03. honesty and openness
04. Domestic support / 04. financial support
05. respect (need to feel competent) / 05. Family commitment (good father = good husband)

A interesting fact: a woman, on average, will communicate 24,000 a day, while men only 7000.

One of the main things I took away from last night was you need to teach what you want and then reinforce. It's clear that men and woman were designed differently, and for good reason, but there is nothing wrong with letting your partner know what it is you want. One of our biggest mistakes is assuming they know and will figure it out. Obviously the same thing can be said about our children. We need to first teach them what we want before we can expect certain behaviors.

All and all I thought it was a great night, pack with a lot of good information and some fun laughs as we all realized just how opposite we can be.

52 photo project | weeks 28-39

I have, for far too long, wanted to resume my participation in Bella's 52 photo project. Since I take photos everyday, I have always loved photo challenges like this that help me think differently about the world I see and push myself creatively.

It was quite interesting as I searched through the prompts from the last ten weeks I've missed, I have actually been playing along this whole time I just didn't realize it. In fact, many of them I've already shared on my blog which is why I just shared a link.

week 39 | color with emotion
When I think of color January seems to be furthest from my mind -- I'm usually mourning the lack of color all month long. However, this January has been different and the grey hasn't seemed to penetrate my days like it usually does. Instead we've had some beautiful sunsets greeting us good evening and I've been grateful for each and every one.

week 38 | close up
week 37 | day one

week 36 | what will you leave behind?
Self doubt -- it does not belong in my life or in 2012

week 35 | Just one picture (2011 favorite)
This was almost impossible for me to choose, but one of the most memorable part of 2011 was our trip to California and taking my girls to the beach for their very first time.

week 34 | holiday sweets
week 33 | colors of the season
week 32 | twinkling lights
week 31 | giving thanks
week 30 | something borrowed
week 29 | Aqua a or Aqua b
week 28 | trick or treat

Remember it's never to late to jump in and play along. Go here for more details.

Have a great evening!

happiness is...

“These big things...are not the important ones. If they were, how could one go on living? No, it is the small, little things that make up a day, that bring fullness and happiness to a life.”
― Benedict and Nancy Freedman (Mrs. Mike)

gratitude journals

gratitude can transform
common days into Thanksgivings,
turn routine jobs into joy
and change ordinary opportunities
into blessings.

~william arthur ward

If you've read my blog for any amount of time than you already know how I feel about expressing gratitude daily and what a difference it can make to our life when we walk through our days constantly noticing the blessings we have. There is just never enough room to allow in the negative thoughts because we are focused on all the good.

So with that said, I am thrilled to finally let you know about my gratitude journals this year. The ladies over at squam (elizabeth, michelle, christine, and jen) and I collaborated to make three beautiful gratitude journals available to you. It is very much like what I offered last year, but they are squam inspired. Each photo on the cover has come from my time either spent in the woods or by the sea.

Below is a beautiful video with Elizabeth, an amazing insightful woman I wish everyone to meet, expressing what gratitude means to her.

Gratitude Journal from Squam on Vimeo.

To purchase one of these journals please visit the squam store (don't delay they are only available until January 31st). It might just be the second best thing you do for yourself all year, the first being going to squam. I can't say enough about what a magnificent experience squam is -- it changed my life, will you let it change yours? They are currently accepting application now so don't wait, classes fill up. Go here to see the four unique retreats and all the classes being offered. Oh and did I mention I was teaching ;)

Thank you thank you for all your support and giving me the chance to share a project that I have loved. I hope a daily gratitude practice is something you will enjoy in twenty twelve.

xoxo

12of12 | January

01. 5am yoga. I can't begin to tell you how hard that was for me to wake up, especially since my muscles are so sore from starting p90x, but I'm glad I did.
02. Lemons. I've been going through these quickly as I've been making green smoothies every morning for breakfast. Would you believe it's delicious?
03. I volunteer at my girls school on Thursdays. I start by reading with Megan's class and then move onto copies for Tess' teacher.
04. Early morning violin. It still doesn't feel right to leave the house before the sun has come up. Although, I do find it enjoyable to watch the sunrise as we drive home.
05. Shadow of a bike on my walk through downtown.
06. Decided to add some instant photos to my 12of12 mix. There certainly is a learning curve, but I've really enjoyed playing with it.
07. Stack o' books. Had to run into the bookstore and was drawn to this book display.
08. Reflection.
09. Sushi with my lovely friend Amy. I always like the dark moody atmosphere there.
10. Came upon these weeds lining someones yard like a barrier keeping out the fray. I imagined the flowers that belong with them must have been beautiful.
11. Bella got her first viola today. Yep you read that right, viola. She is bored to tears in orchestra and so we decided why not learn something new. I'm excited for her to get into this instrument. I love the sound.
12. On the way home I heard them laughing and snapped the picture not knowing what I would capture. I love seeing them all together happy.

Even though it started early it was a really great day, well, until I started feeling a head cold coming on. I actually stopped taking pictures around dinner time and went to bed -- can't say I'm bummed about that or the long weekend ahead.

I hope it was another enjoyable day, another successful month of 12 for you all. January always seems to be a deary few weeks and I don't know what it is, but I'm not feeling it this year. I hope you're feeling the same. :)

Have a great day!!

12of12 | a new year

january | wednesday

february | saturday

march | saturday

april | tuesday

may | thursday

june | sunday

july | tuesday

august | friday

september | monday

october | wednesday

november | saturday

december | monday

I had this big plug about capturing the everyday all written out, but I'm setting it aside and letting the 12of12 speak for itself. Once you begin to see your life and capture your favorite people, your routines, and the bits and pieces of your day not only will you have an assortment of photos that you love, but you will begin to see how beautiful your life is. I like to think of it like gratitude. When you express it daily you begin to see your blessings more and more, and so it is with photography. The more you become acquainted with what's around you the more you appreciate what you have.

So it goes without saying that I am looking forward to another year ahead of capturing my everyday. If you are new to the 12of12 challenge please check out this post where I explain it's origins and the reason I started doing it. Also there is a link to the template I use and a few pointers to get started. Again, like I've done in the past, I will remind you on the 11th and have a post up on the 13th that you can link to (i may try a different link if I can get my act together).

My hope this year is that we will all see the good in our days and by doing so we will begin to see our hearts desire. Meaning, by looking over a years worth of twelves you will begin to see a common thread that links them all together -- the things you go to most are usually the things that light you up.

Have fun!

the forecast says snow

It snowed! After weeks of waiting it finally happened. We woke up Saturday morning surprised to find a blanket of white covering the earth. It was beautiful and well worth the wait (although i am still shocked we went through the holidays with 50 degree weather). I knew immediately what we'd be doing with our weekend.

It actually wasn't too deep when we woke up, which was when I took these pictures, but as the day progressed and snow continued to fall I believe we ended up with close to 3-4 inches.

and it's still here -- well most of it anyway.

While the other girls were sledding Tess and a friend (who couldn't sled) made a fort in the backyard. They struggled to get all the snow they needed and weren't actually able to finish do to time, but they certainly had a great start. Guess we need another storm.

Do you have snow?

right now I'm...

Thinking about all the stuff on my todo list that I've push off to tomorrow. I'm not going to lie, it's big. It's been a seriously fabulous holiday vacation.
Reading the Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and really enjoying it.
Wondering when all the snow will come??

<span class=
Missing, already, the holiday season that brought with it many lazy days together.
Challenging myself to make better food choices in 2012 -- meaning reduce my sugar intake drastically. I know this is the key to helping me with my low energy problem.
Feeling nothing but happy.
Deciding whether I'm up for another race this year.
Setting a goal to journal everyday, yet again. So far so good.
Helping Tess with her science project. She is determining which solution makes the best bubbles.
Learning Spanish or at least attempting to. ¿Cómo estás?
Rewatching Felicity. I think Megan is my favorite character.
Loving the snuggles with my girls, especially with their oh so soft handmade blankets (my mom made them).
Making ??? There will be something on this by the end of the week. I've really missed my projects.
Listening to how I can give to those around me.
Enjoying this quiet night and this last bit of chocolate.
Grateful for a new year, a fresh start, and endless possibilities.
